Tourist Arrested at Ercan Airport for Suspected Drug Possession
An individual, who arrived at Ercan Airport as a tourist, was apprehended after being found in possession of a substance suspected to be drugs concealed in his underwear.
The suspect named only as MÖ, a Turkish national who was in north Cyprus as a tourist was arrested on arrival at Ercan Airport on Saturday April 26. He was subsequently brought before the court on Sunday April 27 on charges of unlawful importation and possession of a controlled substance.
At the hearing, police prosecutor explained that on April 26, 2025, at around 4:50 PM, the suspect was apprehended by a team from the Narcotics and Anti-Smuggling Directorate as he was entering the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) through Ercan Airport.
A search of the suspect and his belongings revealed approximately 5 grams of a substance believed to be drugs, wrapped in toilet paper and a white plastic sheet, hidden inside his underwear within a transparent nylon bag. The suspect was arrested on the spot and brought before the court.
The police further noted that the suspect voluntarily provided a statement following his arrest, and that this statement would be verified. Additionally, the substance seized as evidence would be sent for analysis.
The police requested that the suspect remain in custody for three days to facilitate the ongoing investigation.
