Students arrested for drugs said they got it on social media: Detained for 8 more days

Four suspects accused of drug possession and procurement in Haspolat were interrogated in court on Wednesday and it was revealed that the suspects had shared the drugs they obtained online.

The four suspects identified as TFH, JAT, AM and YK were arrested and brought to court on charges of "Illegal Possession and Procurement of a Controlled Drug (Cannabis)".

At the hearing, police officer who testified in court against them and presented the findings related to the casesaid, on April 4, 2025, a court-ordered search was conducted at the dormitories of the Near East University (NEU) in Haspolat, at the residence shared by TFH and JAT. During the search, five hand-rolled cigarettes believed to contain a mixture of tobacco and cannabis were found and taken as evidence.

Following this, the suspects were arrested in the act. During further questioning and a subsequent search—also under a court order—of the NEU New Dorms residence shared by suspects AM and YK, police found six more hand-rolled cigarettes believed to contain cannabis, approximately 2 grams of cannabis, and a gray digital scale believed to contain drug residue, all of which were seized as evidence.

The police stated that the suspects were brought to court and a 3-day remand was granted. During this period, the investigation revealed that each suspect had contributed 2,000 TL to collectively purchase 10 grams of cannabis for 8,000 TL, which they then shared among themselves.

The suspects reportedly acquired the drugs by contacting an individual via the Snapchat app, who dropped the package at a specified location in Haspolat.

The investigation is ongoing. Police are awaiting forensic analysis results and are still searching for the individual(s) who supplied the drugs. The officer requested an additional 8 days of detention for the suspects.
