Student caught with drugs found living in north Cyprus illegally

A student who was found in possession of drugs during the search carried out on his residence, was found to have been living in north Cyprus without a residence permit.

The suspect, CKN, a Nigerian national was arrested on April 9 and brought to court on charges of drug possession and illegal residency.

Police officer who testified in court stated that on April 9, 2025, between 12.55 and 1.25 PM, during a search conducted by a police team from the Narcotics and Smuggling Prevention Directorate at the residence of the suspect in Lefkoşa with a court order; 28 grams of Indian hemp type narcotics and 28 grams of a precision scale device were found on him and taken as evidence.

Police reported that the suspect was brought to court twice and given a combined 7 days, and that he admitted his guilt in his statement, that he bought 30 grams of the drug from a wanted person on April 8, that he would sell it for financial gain and that he sold one gram of it.

The police stated that the items in question were sent for analysis and that a fingerprint examination would be conducted.

Noting that the individuals who supplied the suspect with drugs and those who received drugs from the suspect were being sought, and that the results of the analysis and fingerprint examination were awaited, the police stated that the suspect's legal status in the country was also being investigated and that it was determined that he had been residing in the country without a residence permit since November 2024.

The police stated that the part of the investigation that the suspect could influence had been completed and that since he had no legal status in the country, he should be kept in prison until trial.

The judge, who evaluated the testimony ordered that the suspect be sent to prison for a term not exceeding 2 months.
