Student accused of drug possession sent to prison

An individual, who was accused of drug possession after the police found banned substance in his residence in Lefkosa has been remanded in custody.

The suspect identified as CKN, a Nigerian Student in north Cyprus was arrested on April 9 for drugs following a search at his residence by a police team from the Narcotics and Anti-Smuggling Department.

He was brought to court on charges of drug possession.

In court, the police stated that during a search conducted by a police team at the suspect's residence in Lefkosa between 12:55 pm to 1:55 pm on April 9 with a court order; 29 grams of a substance believed to be Indian hemp and a precision scale believed to have drug residue on it were found and taken as evidence.

Police reported that the suspect was brought to court and given a 1-day detention order.

The police officer stated that the substances in question were sent for analysis and that fingerprint examinations would be conducted.

During investigation, police said the suspect admitted his guilt in his statement, saying that he bought 30 grams of the drug from a wanted person on April 8, that he would sell it for financial gain, and that he sold one gram of it.

The police also noted that the suspects who supplied drugs and those who received drugs from the suspect were being sought.

Police said, that the results of the analysis and fingerprint examination were awaited, and also stated that the suspect's legal status in the country would also be investigated and requested that the suspect remain in custody for an additional 7 days.

The suspect's lawyer, Ramadan Sanıvar, asked whether they had any evidence that his client was selling drugs. The police said they found packaging and weighing equipment in the house and that the suspect gave a voluntary statement.

The defense claimed that the suspect's statement was not voluntary and that he did not sell drugs.
