Pakistani delivery driver killed in accident in Cyprus

Police in south Cyprus have arrested the 38-year-old driver of a vehicle that was involved in a fatal crash on Wednesday night, in which a 34-year-old Pakistani delivery driver was killed.

According to Limassol traffic police, the accident happened at around 10.30pm on the crossing of Omonia and Paphos streets, when a car hit the electric scooter used by the delivery driver.

The 38-year-old driver of the car involved tested positive in a preliminary drug test and was arrested.

The delivery driver was taken to Limassol general hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. Police informed Yasir Shah’s relatives about his death on Thursday morning.

During questioning, the 38-year-old said the delivery driver swerved in front of him, an allegation the police are looking into.

The traffic police are conducting investigations and examinations to determine the exact cause of the accident, Kafas said, adding that examinations will be conducted from this morning to search for footage from any closed-circuit television and to seek further testimony.

Asked to comment on the fact that the car came to a halt at a considerable distance from the crash site, Kafas said this “may indicate high speed, but it may also be that the driver was shocked and needed that distance to realise it and stop”.

The 38-year-old driver of the vehicle was later arrested under a court warrant, to facilitate police investigations.
