Massive protests against headscarf policy changes in schools to be held across north Cyprus tonight
Turkish Unions and political parties will take to the streets of North Cyprus this evening to protests against government decisions to allow the free use of headscarves in secondary education.
According to Turkish Cypriot media, the main demonstration in Lefkosa is scheduled to begin at 6 pm, with unionists protesting with banners and slogans supporting secular education. Similar gatherings and marches have been planned in Kyrenia, Güzelyurtand Famagusta.
Organisers emphasise that these events aim to reject any attempts to interfere with secular education and protect social values, focusing on the cultural and educational character of the region.
Turkish Cypriot press reports indicate that under pressure from Ankara, the administration has paved the way for the unrestricted use of headscarves in secondary education.
Northern Cyprus has historically maintained secular educational policies aligned with the Turkish system established under Ataturk’s reforms, though religious influences have increased in recent years.
