Man steals electricity worth 200,000 Turkish Lira in illegal connection in north Cyprus
The Turkish Cypriot police said it arrested a man who fraudulently connected electricity to his home in Hamitköy and consumed electricity worth almost 200,000 TL.
The situation was detected on Thursday April 24 when employees of the Turkish Cyprus electricity authority, KIB-TEK went to Hamitköy to fix a problem when it was determined that a cable was fraudulently pulled from the fuse of a house's electricity meter through which electricity was stolen illegally.
After the incident was brought to the attention of the police, a 44-year-old man named only as A.Ç., a resident of Atatürk Street in who was considered a suspect in the incident, was identified and arrested.
The suspect was brought to court on Friday April 25.
According to police statement on the matter, on the morning of April 24, 2025, around 08:00, technicians from the Electricity Authority detected a fault on an electricity pole in the suspect's yard. During the inspection, they discovered an illegal cable connection running from the pole to the house.
In his statement, the suspect A.Ç. admitted that he had been using this setup to operate the air conditioners in his home for about a year.
Police stated that during this period, the amount of electricity used was valued at 200,000 TL and that the investigation is ongoing.
The police requested that the suspect remain in custody for an additional three days to collect further statements and accurately determine the total amount of stolen electricity.
After reviewing the evidence, the judge ordered that A.Ç. be detained for three more days.
