Man currently serving a 30-month prison term sentenced to another one-year in prison for breaking his cellmate's jaw
A prisoner who is currently serving a 30-month prison sentence since 2023 for drug and fraud crimes has been sentenced to another one year in prison for breaking the jaw of his cellmate.
The decision against the suspect, Hüseyin Kıstı, was announced by the senior judge of the High Criminal Court on Wednesday April 16.
The presiding judge stated that the defendant had been convicted of the serious bodily harm charge, which carries a maximum sentence of 7 years and is considered a common offense.
The judge noted that while in prison for rehabilitation, the defendant punched another inmate multiple times in the face in front of security cameras, breaking his jaw. The judge considered the manner in which the crime was committed as an aggravating factor against the defendant.
The judge emphasized that no one has the right to use physical force against another person under any circumstances.
Stating that courts must impose deterrent sentences for common crimes, the judge also said they took into consideration, in the defendant’s favor, that the victim did not file a complaint and that the treatment period was short.
The judge announced that the defendant was sentenced to one year in prison for the offense of serious bodily harm.
