Lefkosia Municipality to launch nighttime public transportation service
In order to develop alternative solutions to traffic problems, the Lefkosia Turkish Municipality (LTB) is preparing to launch a nighttime public transportation service.
LTB Mayor Mehmet Harmancı announced that the project will be implemented in May with a three-month trial period.
In a statement made via his personal social media account, Harmancı emphasized that traffic problems cannot be solved through fines alone and that the sense of justice in society is being undermined. He noted that a recent incident, in which a district governor did not receive equal treatment before the law, has shaken public confidence in justice.
Harmancı highlighted that Nicosia is a city with a heavy service sector presence, and due to increasing fines and daily losses, the need to provide a safe alternative has become essential. In this context, he stated that a preliminary agreement has been reached in principle with companies that hold licenses for inner-city public transportation.
Harmancı said that LTB aims to establish an effective transportation network by renting two vehicles each evening between 7:00 PM and 12:30 AM. As part of the project, night services will be provided, especially on routes with high service sector activity.
Mayor Harmancı also mentioned that during the week, they will meet with representatives of the service sector to share the plans and will present the issue in detail to the traffic commission.
