Individual remanded for forging birth year on ID card

An individual has been remanded in custody for two days in northern Cyprus after it was determined that he altered the date of birth on his identity card.

The suspect named as TMG was arrested in  in Girne on Tuesday April 15 and brought to court on Wednesday April 16 on charges of "Forgery of an Official Document" and "Circulating a Forged Official Document".

The police in a court testimony said at around 9:30 PM on April 15, 2025, the suspect, a resident of the same area, was brought to the Criminal Division of the Girne Police Department on Sedat Simavi Street to be warned regarding a traffic incident.

After the necessary warning was given by the officers, the suspect allegedly altered the year of birth on his Republic of Northern Cyprus identity card from 2003 to 1997 and circulated the forged document by sending it to the officers via the “Airdrop” application on his mobile phone.

The suspect was arrested and his phone was taken as evidence.

The police noted that the investigation is ongoing and that the suspect’s mobile phone will be examined. They requested an additional 2-day detention period.
