‘Digital travel credential’ to end check-ins and boarding passes, aviation body says

The International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) is developing a “digital travel credential” system that would eliminate the need for check-in procedures and physical boarding passes, potentially transforming how passengers move through airports.

The new technology, which could be implemented within the next three years, would allow travellers to store their passport in digital form on their mobile phones, according to reports in The Times and The Guardian.

The digital travel pass would be issued when booking a flight and automatically updated in case of schedule changes, ICAO said.

Using biometric data, particularly facial recognition, passengers could pass through all airport stages – from security checks to boarding – without physical documents or traditional check-in procedures.

Airlines would be automatically notified of a passenger’s presence at the airport once their identity is confirmed through facial scanning.

The initiative by the United Nations’ specialised aviation agency aims to improve the travel experience by reducing delays and enhancing security while promising faster and less stressful journeys for passengers.

While the digital transition is expected to face challenges, particularly regarding personal data protection and international compatibility, proponents view it as the future of air travel.
