China builds world’s tallest bridge in ambitious engineering feat

China is on track to break yet another engineering record with the construction of the Huajiang Canyon Bridge in the mountainous Guizhou province, a suspension bridge set to become the tallest in the world upon completion in June 2025.

Spanning the Beipan River through the dramatic Huajiang Canyon, the bridge’s deck will tower 625 metres above the canyon floor, surpassing the current record held by the Duge Bridge, located around 200 km to the north on the same river.

The project includes two 262-metre-high towers and stretches a total length of 2,890 metres, with a central span of 1,420 metres. Construction began in 2021 and has progressed rapidly, with crews racing to meet the mid-2025 opening target.

Beyond its record-breaking height, the bridge carries strategic importance. Designed to stimulate economic growth in one of China’s most remote rural regions, it aims to connect isolated communities, reduce travel time across the canyon from 70 minutes to just one, and open the area to tourism. Plans for an extreme sports centre at the canyon base are also underway, in hopes of transforming the site into a regional attraction.

The bridge’s inauguration, scheduled for 2025, is expected to draw global attention—not only for its technical achievements but also for its broader social and economic impact.
