Aftershock continue to shake Istanbul after 6.2 magnitude earthquake, residents urged to stay outdoor

Continued aftershocks rattled Istanbul on Wednesday following a powerful 6.2 magnitude earthquake that struck west of Turkey’s largest city, with authorities warning residents to remain outdoors and away from buildings.

The initial tremor, which hit near Silivri in the Sea of Marmara around midday, has been followed by a series of aftershocks keeping citizens on high alert as they gathered in streets and open spaces across the metropolis.

TGRT television reported that one person was injured after jumping from a balcony during the earthquake.

Turkish emergency authorities have issued warnings urging people to avoid entering buildings, particularly those showing signs of damage, as seismologists monitor the ongoing seismic activity.

“Do not enter damaged buildings in the area after the earthquake. Do not be around hazardous structures,” the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) stated in a social media post, also advising residents to communicate via text messages rather than voice calls to prevent network congestion.

Streets across Istanbul remained filled with anxious residents hours after the main shock, with many unwilling to return to their homes despite the cool weather.

The earthquake comes as a particular concern for Istanbul, a city of 16 million people that experts have long warned faces significant seismic risk due to its proximity to the North Anatolian Fault.

No serious injuries or major structural damage have been reported beyond isolated incidents, though authorities continue to conduct comprehensive assessments across the region.
