Turkish Cypriot police issues holiday warning and measure

The north Cyprus General Directorate of Police (PGM) announced that all necessary measures have been taken for a peaceful and safe holiday, and it will be at the service of the public 24 hours a day.

In the statement made by PGM regarding the measures taken for the Ramadan holiday, it was stated that people can reach the police through “155 Police Emergency, 199 Fire Department, 156 Narcotics,” and other telephone lines without interruption during the holiday.

The statement highlighted that citizens should take precautions against possible fires and theft when leaving their homes and workplaces during the holiday. It said, "Before leaving your home or workplace, check your security systems, make sure your security camera systems are active and operational, and lock all doors and windows. Also, check electrical devices and outlets and take precautions to avoid causing a fire."

The statement also advised, "Do not drive under the influence of alcohol" and stated, "During the holiday, in the intensified traffic, to ensure the safety of yourself, your loved ones, and others, do not drive while under the influence of alcohol. If necessary, use transportation services."

Warnings were made regarding speeding, with an emphasis on the importance of reaching the destination safely rather than focusing on speed. The statement also called on citizens to completely disconnect from their mobile phones while driving, as distracted driving causes accidents. It reminded people that seat belts save lives and stated that it is illegal to transport children under three years old in motor vehicles without a child car seat.

It was also mentioned that children between 135-150 cm in height must sit in the back seat of a motor vehicle and wear a seatbelt. Children shorter than 135 cm must sit in a child car seat in the back seat and wear a seatbelt. It is prohibited for children shorter than 150 cm to sit in the front seat of motor vehicles.

The statement emphasized that drivers and passengers of motorcycles (including motorized three-wheelers, motorcycles, and ATVs) must wear protective helmets for their safety.

It concluded with the following remarks: "Religious holidays, which hold indispensable importance in our lives, are exceptional days that strengthen our social unity, reinforce love, respect, and tolerance. Creating an environment of tolerance, peace, and brotherhood among all segments of society will also contribute to solving problems. We sincerely wish all our people a blessed Ramadan Holiday and hope that they have a healthy, peaceful, and accident-free holiday."
