Suspect caught with 500 grams of cannabis, another on the run
A student, who was stopped for traffic search on the Lefkosia-Famagusta was arrested while a passenger in the same vehicle fled after discarding a bag containing drugs.
The incident happened on on the Lefkosia-Famagusta main road around 11:45 PM on Sunday March 15.
According to police, a suspect who was a passenger in a suspicious vehicle that was stopped by the police threw away a bag containing drugs and fled.
The police team which was on patrol, detected a vehicle driving fast and dangerously. The vehicle was quickly followed and stopped, and as the police approached the vehicle, the driver was seen throwing a package into the vehicle.
The driver of the vehicle identified as EE., 30, a Nigerian was found with half kilogram of drugs and arrested.
He was brought before the court on Monday.
Police said the vehicle, which was suspected of waving due to its erratic movement, was stopped by Demirhan Police Station officers. At that moment, a male passenger sitting in the front seat threw a bag containing drugs about 1.5 meters away from the car and fled on foot. The police recovered the bag, and the driver was arrested.
Upon searching the bag, the police found 500 grams of a substance believed to be cannabis, which was seized as evidence.
The police stated that the investigation has just begun, that they are searching for the fleeing individual, and that the seized substance will be sent for analysis.
They also mentioned that the suspect’s mobile phone would be examined and requested an additional 3-day detention for further investigation.
In court, the suspect claimed that he did not know the fleeing individual, that he had picked him up while he was hitchhiking on the road, and denied any involvement with the drugs.
