Student caught with cannabis in university dormitory released on bail, banned from traveling abroad
A student who was arrested in Haspolat for dealing in illegal drugs following a police search at a university campus has been released o bail.
The suspect, named only as KL., a Zambian national who has been in police custody since March 13 was charged with "Illegal Possession of Narcotic Substances".
Presenting the case in court, the police stated that the suspect was arrested at around 9:00 pm on March 13, 2025 during a search conducted at the dormitory of International Cyprus University in Haspolat where the suspect resides.
According to the police, during the search, approximately one gram of ground cannabis-type drugs were found in a metal grinder inside the drawer of a nightstand next to the suspect’s bed. Additionally, one rolled cannabis cigarette, 18 pre-rolled cannabis cigarettes in a backpack inside the wardrobe, and six separate aluminum foil-wrapped cannabis packages with a total weight of 5 grams were discovered.
The police stated that the suspect was arrested, and an investigation was initiated. The police said the suspect voluntarily provided a statement, and that he had been brought to court twice and detained for 7 days.
Declaring that the investigation was completed, the police requested that the suspect be released on bail, noting that the he is a student.
After evaluating the testimony, the judge ordered that the suspect to be released on bail on the condition that he is banned from leaving the country, report to the police once a week, deposit 40,000 TL in cash as bail, and sign a 100,000 TL personal surety bond.
