Student caught with cannabis in search at university dormitoy
A student who was arrested in Haspolat for dealing in drugs following a police search at a university campus was remanded in custody for three days.
The suspect, named only as KL., a Zambian national was identified and arrested on March 13 in Haspolat and was brought to court on Friday on charges of "Illegal Possession of Narcotic Substances,"
Presenting the case in court, the police stated that the suspect was arrested at around 9:00 pm on Thursday March 13, 2025 in Haspolat.
The police emphasized that officers from the Crime Prevention Unit (CÖŞ) of the Lfkosia Police Department conducted a search at the dormitory residence of the suspect, who is a student at the International University of Cyprus.
As a result of the search, the police found approximately one gram of ground cannabis in a metal grinder inside the drawer of a bedside table next to the suspect's bed. Additionally, they discovered a substance believed to be cannabis in a separate package, as well as 18 pre-rolled joints containing what was believed to be cannabis inside an alcohol can stored in a gray Relaxion backpack in the wardrobe.
Furthermore, six separate aluminum foil-wrapped packages containing a total of 5 grams of what was believed to be cannabis were also found.
The police stated that the suspect was arrested and an investigation was launched. They also informed the court that the suspect had given a voluntary statement.
The police requested that the suspect be allowed to remain in detention for 3 more days, explaining that the investigation had just begun, and the seized substances would be sent for analysis while the suspect’s statements would be examined.
Addressing the court, the suspect claimed innocence, saying, "The substances they found do not belong to me; I was forced into this. I was waiting for those individuals to come and collect the drugs."
