Student arrested in north Cyprus for assaulting employer over flight ticket

A student was on Tuesday remanded in custody for one month after he was arrested for physically assaulting his employer over flight ticket.

The incident happened on March 1 in Lefkosa.

The suspect named only as TWKN, a Cameroon national was arrested and brought to court on Tuesday March 3 on charges of “Malicious Damage and Serious Assault”.

Police officer who testified in court said the suspect, seriously assaulted his boss named as KYA, by pushing him in the chest with both hands and causing his back to hit a wooden flower pot.

The police said the incident happened following a verbal argument that broke out between them at a workplace on Atatürk Street in Lefkosa on March 1, 2025, on the grounds that he did not issue a plane ticket for him.

The police also informed the court that as a result of the incident, the complainant intentionally damaged a ceramic piece worth 500 TL and a wooden flower pot worth 5,000TL by causing it to crack.

Police said the suspect was arrested pursuant to a court order and gave a voluntary statement as part of an investigation into the matter.

Noting that the suspect was taken to court and was initially detained additional for 2 days, the police stated that the necessary investigation was carried out during this period.

The police stated that the suspect's employer had applied to cancel his work permit and that he would no longer have legal status in the country, and requested that he be detained why facing trial.

Speaking in court, the suspect said that his boss insulted and humiliated him and that he committed this crime in a moment of anger because he was angry about it.

The judge ordered that the suspect be sent to prison for a period not exceeding one month.
