Student arrested for living in north Cyprus illegally for 5 years, to be deported

A student who had been living illegally in northern Cyprus for five years, was arrested and brought to court on Saturday.

The individual named as F.O., a Nigerian who had been living illegally in the northern part of Cyprus for five years, was arrested and brought to court on Saturday March 15.

Presenting the case in court, the police stated that the suspect was found acting suspiciously at around 1:00 am on March 14, 2025, during a patrol by a team of police on Dr. Burhan Nalbantoğlu Street.

A migration control check revealed that the suspect had been residing in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) without permission for a total of 1,566 days since November 29, 2020.

The police stated that the suspect was arrested and an investigation was initiated. Additionally, they mentioned that the necessary correspondence would be carried out with the Civil Immigration Department to begin the deportation process. 

The police requested the suspect be allowed to remain in detention for three more days.
