Police in south Cyprus arrest Nigerian, a suspect in cross-border human trafficking

Authorities in Cyprus (south) have made a new arrest in an ongoing human trafficking and prostitution investigation with connection to Nigeria, even as the main case proceeds to criminal court.

The 49-year-old suspect, known by the alias “School boy,” was brought before Limassol District Court on Wednesday March 12, which issued a two-day detention order.

According to investigators, the suspect allegedly served as a transporter for victims, shuttling them to various establishments where they were sexually exploited.

Following his arrest, authorities conducted an identification parade where a victim positively identified him, strengthening the case against the trafficking network that appears to operate with international connections extending to Nigeria.

The primary case has been referred to Limassol Criminal Court.

Three defendants remain in custody, facing multiple serious charges including conspiracy to commit felony and misdemeanor, adult human trafficking, sexual exploitation, money laundering, maintaining a brothel, and living off the earnings of prostitution.

Investigators have uncovered an elaborate operation where network members allegedly arranged apartment rentals, posted advertisements on online platforms, and provided clothing and accessories for victims’ “services”.

The investigation began in May when the Anti-Trafficking Unit received information from Larnaca CID about a trafficking victim who initially reported theft before revealing she had been brought to Cyprus to work in prostitution.

Among those previously charged is a 29-year-old who plays football for a third-division team in Limassol. He allegedly managed online advertisements for sexual services and played an active role in the network’s operations.

Police investigations continue as authorities seek at least one additional suspect believed to be connected to the trafficking operation.
