Minor earthquake of magnitude 3.0 rattles Lefkosa, Cyprus, no damage reported
A mild earthquake struck Cyprus on Sunday afternoon, with tremors felt across several areas of the island.
According to preliminary data from the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Centre, the quake occurred at 1:08 pm local time and had a magnitude of 3.0 on the Richter scale. Its epicentre was located 28 kilometres southwest of Nicosia, at a depth of 15.6 kilometres.
There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.
Former president of the TRNC Chamber of Geoscience Engineers, Oğuz Vadilili, in
a statement on social media confirmed the earthquake. He emphasized
that the earthquake was felt slightly and called for caution.
"A 3 magnitude earthquake occurred with its epicenter in Lefkoşa. Our local people felt the earthquake with a mild intensity. The good thing is that the magnitude and intensity values were compatible with each other, Oğuz Vadilili said in a statement.
As usual, there was a magnitude 3 earthquake. Please do not just give information about the earthquake's magnitude, depth and location.
Why?
The focal point of the earthquake, that is, its depth, is 16 km shallow. This depth is not compatible with the southern branch of the Cyprus arc.
This seems to be compatible with the northern branch of the Cyprus Arc, the Ovgos fault zone. Probably the Nicosia segment. This earthquake needs fault analysis. Like every earthquake, actually. This possibility should be proven scientifically.
After that, fault risk analysis. Because we shape our lives by accepting these faults as null and void.!!!
This is why the JMD-MTA terrestrial active fault map is so important.
This is why the JMD-AFAD Earthquake Monitoring and Evaluation Center is so important.
