Foxes spotted roaming Nicosia city centre in south Cyprus
Developers spotted four foxes in one of the busiest intersections of Nicosia, the Metochi Kykkos area, where a major construction project is under study.
The study includes a greenhouse, that has long been abandoned, various cultivations and orchards, conditions highly favourable to the unique Cypriot fox, both as living and hunting quarters.
A relevant environmental study of flora and fauna in the area, records the presence of at least four foxes, making their nests within the plot.
The Cyprus fox is an endemic subspecies of the island and the only carnivorous mammal. It’s population has been steadily dropping over the past few decades, due to hunting and loss of habitat.
