Clocks to move forward as Daylight saving time for 2025 start on Sunday, 30 March

Daylight saving time for 2025 will come into effect on Sunday, 30 March.

Cyprus will adjust to daylight saving time early Sunday morning, with clocks moving forward one hour as part of an EU-wide synchronised change. The public is advised to move their clock forward by one hour.

The transition will take place at 3:00 a.m. on Sunday, March 30, when timepieces across the country will advance by one hour.

The summer time period will remain in effect until Sunday, 26 October 2025, when standard time will resume.

This measure is implemented across all European Union member states as part of the bloc’s time harmonisation framework.

The time adjustment is mandatory for all EU member states and follows European Directive 2000/84/EC, which standardises the beginning and end of daylight saving time. Under this directive, summer time begins on the last Sunday of March and ends on the last Sunday of October.

The adoption of daylight saving time emerged primarily as an energy conservation measure following the 1973-1974 energy crisis and the significant increase in petroleum prices during that period.

After successful implementation in Greece and other countries in 1975, Cyprus adopted the practice the following year.

Extending daylight hours during summer months reduces artificial lighting requirements during evening hours when electricity demand typically peaks.

The synchronisation of time adjustments across all EU member states facilitates the functioning of the European Union’s internal market, particularly in transportation, banking, and commercial transactions.
