Student who provided false information to the police found to have been living in north Cyprus illegally

An individual who provided false information to the police during traffic inspections in Lefkosia and was found to have been residing in the country without a resident permit has been sent to prison for a period not exceeding one month.

The individual, SK, a Congolese student in north Cyprus was arrested in Lefkosa, north Cyprus on Saturday February 1.

He was brought to court on Monday February 3 on charges of "residing in TRNC without permission and inducing the issuance of a document through false statements".

Police officer who testified in court said the suspect was stopped by traffic teams conducting inspections on Osman Pasha Street in Lefkosa at around 11:25 pm on February 1 while driving a rental car.

After an alcohol test was carried out on the suspect, the suspect gave the police a false name to record on the information-registration form. 

The police determined that the suspect had provided a false name and was subsequently arrested. Upon an immigration check, it was revealed that he had been residing in TRNC without permission for 796 days since November 29, 2022.

The officer stated that the investigation was complete and requested the suspect's detention until trial due to their unauthorized stay in the country.

After evaluating the testimony, the judge ordered that the suspect remain in prison for a period not exceeding one month until the trial.
