Student detained for living in north Cyprus illegally

A student who was arrested by police in north Cyprus for living in the country without a resident permit was detained for 3 days.

The individual named only as HHA was arrested by the police on Feb. 23 during a police search at a residence in Küçük Kaymaklı, Lefkosa.

He was brought to court for remaining without a residence permit in Northern Cyprus.

The police stated that the suspect, who was identified during a search of a foreign national's house, was determined to have been residing in the TRNC without a residence permit for 146 days since September 20, 2024.

The police noted that the suspect an investigation was launched following the arrest and that correspondence would be made for his deportation.

The police requested that the suspect be detained for 3 days so that the investigation could be carried out smoothly.

The police also said that the suspect came to the country as a student but did not attend any school.

Speaking in court, the suspect said he wanted a second chance and wanted to stay in the country.

The judge, who evaluated the testimony given in court, ordered the suspect to be detained for 3 days.
