Nicosia records coldest temperature in 40 years: Sub-zero temperatures to continue in Cyprus

Cyprus recorded its coldest temperature in four decades early on Tuesday as the mercury in Nicosia plunged to -3.7 degrees Celsius, according to KitasWeather.

The record-breaking reading was registered at 5:57 AM at the Athalassa radiosonde station, breaking the previous low of -3.3a degrees Celsius set on March 1, 1985.

This marks the lowest temperature recorded at the station since its installation in 1983.

The freezing conditions were part of a broader cold snap affecting the entire island, with sub-zero temperatures reported at several locations across Cyprus overnight.

Weather officials have issued advisories for potentially hazardous conditions, particularly in mountainous and inland areas, as the cold spell continues.

Meanwhile, the cold air mass dubbed “Coral” is still affecting Cyprus, bringing freezing temperatures across the island.

The weather today will be partly cloudy with light to occasionally moderate southwesterly to northwesterly winds of 3 to 4 Beaufort.

The sea will remain slightly rough. Temperatures will rise to approximately 14°C inland and along the coast, and 4°C in the highest mountain areas.

Frost will persist in the mountains and locally in semi-mountainous areas during the early hours.

By Tuesday evening, partly cloudy conditions will continue with isolated showers possible along the western coast. Winds will be mainly northwesterly to northeasterly at 3 Beaufort.

The forecast for Wednesday indicates partly cloudy weather with isolated showers expected in the afternoon and snowfall in the mountains.

Thursday will see locally increased cloud coverage with isolated showers in the afternoon.

Friday’s weather will be predominantly cloudy with local rain or thunderstorms expected in the afternoon, with snowfall anticipated in the highest mountain areas on both Thursday and Friday.

Temperatures will gradually increase notably until Thursday, then stabilise on Friday, reaching levels close to seasonal averages.

The snow depth at Chionistra was measured at 5 centimetres at the time of the weather bulletin’s issuance.
