Drug suspect caught with cocaine in north Cyprus
An individual who was arrested for drug possession, importation, and acquisition offenses, has been ordered to remain in custody for three more days.
The suspect, Y.M, a Turkish national was arrested in Lefkoşa for unlawful drug possession, importation, and acquisition offenses and was brought back to court.
Presenting the case in court, the police officer stated that on January 30, 2025, during a joint operation conducted by the Narcotics and Crime Prevention Division (ÇÖŞ), the suspect was found inside a tow truck in the Ortaköy area of Lefkoşa.
A search of the vehicle revealed 100 grams of a substance believed to be cocaine, wrapped in two separate plastic bags, hidden under the passenger seat. The suspect was caught in the act and arrested.
The police reported that the suspect provided a confession, admitting that he obtained the drugs through a contact in the Greek Cypriot side via a phone arrangement. He further stated that he was supposed to deliver the drugs to another person in the north, following instructions from his contact in the south, in exchange for €300.
The police emphasized that the investigation was still in its early stages, with statements yet to be taken and security camera footage to be reviewed. Additionally, the seized substance would be sent for analysis.
The officer also noted that both the supplier and the intended recipient of the drugs were still being sought, requesting a three-day extension of the suspect's detention.
After reviewing the testimony, the judge ordered the suspect to remain in custody for an additional three days.
