24-year-old man die in fatal accident on the Lefkoşa-Güzelyurt Highway: Hit and run driver caught in Lefke
A 24-year-old man died in the early hours of Sunday morning after he was struck by a speeding vehicle on the Lefkoşa-Güzelyurt road. The driver who fled the scene of the accident was later caught and arrested.
The fatal accident occurred at around 12:40 am on Sunday February 9 on the Lefkoşa-Güzelyurt Highway, resulting in the death of 24-year-old Ahmet Can Kepenek.
According to information from the Police Press Office, 22-year-old Tahsin Yamaner was driving at high speed and recklessly heading west. When he reached the front of Onan Ltd in Gönyeli, he struck Ahmet Can Kepenek, who was attempting to cross the road. The driver fled the scene without stopping.
Kepenek succumbed to his injuries at the scene. The police said that Kepenk's body was taken to the Lefkoşa State Hospital morgue for autopsy purposes.
The suspect was tracked down in Lefke at around 5:00 am on the same day and arrested. The vehicle was located in Lefka and it was determined that the vehicle in question was a Range Rover with the registration plate YM 003.
The suspected driver was brought to court on Sunday.
The
police stated that a blood sample was taken from the suspect for
analysis, that the investigation was ongoing, that there were camera
footages that needed to be examined and statements to be taken, and
requested that he be detained for 3 days.
The court ordered the suspect to be detained for 3 days in the first instance pending trial.
