Woman arrested for fraudulently obtaining money from her employer

A suspect accused of making false claims about hospital expenses to fraudulently obtain 18,000 TL from an individual, has been released on bail by the court.

The suspect, LM, a Turkish national was arrested in Lefkosa and brought to court on charges of "obtaining money by deception," appeared in court yesterday morning and was released on bail.

According to police prosecutor, in December 2024, the suspect who resides in Lefkosia and worked as a caregiver for S.E. (a 70-year-old female), allegedly deceived her employer. The suspect claimed that her sister, who was hospitalized in a private hospital, had medical expenses, and through this false representation, obtained 18,000 TL in cash from S.E.

The police stated that the incident was reported on January 15, 2025, and that the suspect was arrested the same day under a court order.

The police also noted that the suspect admitted to receiving the money but claimed it was compensation for an underpaid salary. 

The investigation has concluded the parts of the case that the suspect could influence. The police confirmed that the suspect has no prior criminal record and requested bail.

Speaking in court, the suspect denied intending to deceive, reiterating that she considered the money as part of her unpaid wages.

The judge after evaluating the evidence presented, ruled that the suspect could remain free pending trial under strict conditions. These include a ban on leaving the country, a cash bail of 35,000 TL, a personal guarantee of 200,000 TL from a TRNC citizen, and an obligation to report to the police once every two weeks.
