Weather change to bring rain and snow to Cyprus by mid-week
The island-wide weather system will bring rain and muddy rain showers, isolated thunderstorms, and snow at Troodos mountains, accompanied by a notable temperature drop. The change comes as a trough of low pressure in the middle troposphere and surface low pressures move into the region.
Temperatures will remain unseasonably high until Wednesday.
Despite the incoming rainfall, January’s precipitation levels will remain amongst the five driest on record. The two-day weather system is expected to bring only 7-15 millimetres of average rainfall, far below the 99 millimetres needed to reach normal January levels.
The Troodos mountain range is expected to see snowfall from Wednesday, initially mixed with rain before turning to snow, with light snow cover possible at higher elevations.
Temperatures will drop significantly by Wednesday to seasonal averages, with inland areas reaching 14-16 degrees Celsius, coastal regions 15-17 degrees, and Chionistra peak dropping to 1 degree Celsius.
The weather system is forecast to begin clearing by Thursday evening, though isolated showers may persist in coastal areas.
