TikTok officially banned in the U.S., Trump signals possible temporary reprieve

As of today ( Sunday January 19, 2025), TikTok users in the United States can no longer access the platform, following the enforcement of a law banning the popular app. A message posted on TikTok informs users of the ban while hinting at a potential resolution under the incoming administration.

Platform Message

“The law banning TikTok is now in effect in the U.S. Unfortunately, this means you cannot use TikTok at the moment. We are fortunate that President Trump has indicated his willingness to work with us on a solution to restore TikTok after his inauguration. Please stay tuned,” the message read.

Trump’s Statement

President-elect Donald Trump, speaking Saturday, hinted at the possibility of a 90-day suspension of the ban once he takes office on Monday. “A 90-day extension is something that will probably happen, because it’s the right thing to do,” Trump stated in an NBC interview. He added, “If I decide to proceed, I will likely announce it on Monday.”

Political Reactions

The White House emphasized that the next administration will have to take decisive action on the matter. Meanwhile, the Chinese Embassy in Washington accused the U.S. of misusing state power to suppress TikTok. “China will take all necessary measures to safeguard its legitimate rights and interests,” a spokesperson for the embassy asserted.
