Mother and child die in accident in north Cyprus

A 41-year-old woman and her 5-year-old child became the latest victim of traffic accident in north Cyprus after they were involved in an accident that occurred on the Girne-Ağırdağ service road early this morning.

According to information provided by the Police Press Office, a tragic traffic accident occurred today at around 6:30 AM on Şehit Sonay Özdayı Street in Girne Boğazköy, claiming the lives of two people.

The vehicle, bearing license plate FH 800 and driven by 41-year-old Mehtap Kanal, a resident of Ağırdağ, was traveling north when the driver lost control of the steering wheel. The car veered off the road to the left and collided with a tree on the roadside.

Following the impact, the vehicle was thrown sideways, overturned onto its right side, and struck another tree with its roof before coming to a stop.

The accident resulted in the death of driver Mehtap Kanal and her 12-year-old daughter, Ecrin Başbınar, who was a passenger in the car. Both lost their lives at the scene.

Police have stated that an investigation into the incident is ongoing. 

With this tragic accident, the number of fatalities from traffic accidents in 2025 has risen to 7.

Authorities have once again reminded the public of the importance of adhering to traffic rules and driving cautiously, urging all drivers to be more careful on the roads.

This incident, which has deeply saddened the entire community—especially the families of the victims—highlights the critical importance of road safety.
