Man steals over 400,000 Turkish Lira of company's money meant to pay workers salaries

A 33-year-old man working in a company in Lefkoşa allegedly stole over 400,000 TL met to pay the salaries of employees.

The suspect identified only as MEY working at a company in the Yenişehir area of Lefkosia named Avunduk Dairy Products Industry Ltd was found to have stolen a total of 407,000 Turkish Lira in cash, which he had received from the company between December 27, 2024, and January 7, 2025, to pay the company's employees. 

Instead of paying the employees, he misappropriated the money for his own use.

Following an in-depth investigation by the police, the individual in question was identified and taken into custody.

He was brought before the Lefkosa District Court on Sunday charged with theft.

Police stated that the suspect admitted to losing the money in online gambling, but his statement has not yet been confirmed.

The police became aware of the incident on January 11 and that the suspect was located and arrested at his residence under an arrest warrant obtained from the Lefkosia District Court.

On the same day, a search warrant was executed at the suspect's residence, but nothing illegal was found, according to the police.

The police revealed that the suspect gave a voluntary statement admitting to losing the money in online gambling.

The police noted that the investigation is still in its early stages and that surveillance footage and witness statements need to be reviewed.

The police stated that the whereabouts of the stolen money still need to be determined and requested that the suspect be held in custody for three days during the initial stage of the investigation.
