Man steals meat from supermarket in north Cyprus, then returned it because ‘it stinks’ and got a refund

So a local man stole meat from a supermarket in north Cyprus and took it home. When he noticed that the meat was bad, he returned it and got a refund.

The TRNC police on Thursday January 9 launched legal action against a 69-year-old Turkish Cyprus man who stole meat from a supermarket in Güzelyurt on New Year’s Eve and returned it the following day saying “it stinks”, receiving a refund.

The man reportedly visited the supermarket on December 31, 2024 and stole lamb meat and a bottle of wine, with a total value of 949.67TL.

The following day, he returned to the same supermarket, telling staff the meat “stinks” and demanding a refund. The supermarket staff obliged and gave him 809.68TL.

After staff were made aware of what had happened, they notified the police, who found evidence linking the man to the crime.

He then visited the same supermarket on Monday January 6, 2025 and stole “various food items” worth a total of 645.92TL, before being caught.

The police’s investigation into the matter is ongoing.
