Man in detention for assaulting his wife

In a case of domestic violence, a man who allegedly assaulted a woman physically in Lapta, north Cyprus was sent to prison for two days on court order.

The suspect, "M.B. was arrested in Lapta and taken to court on charges of 'Injury, Grievous Harm, Serious Assault, and Insult (Violence Against Women).' 

The police stated that at around 12:30 AM on January 18, 2025, in the living room of a residence in Alsancak, during an argument that arose out of jealousy, the suspect M.B. assaulted his common-law wife, N.A., who resides in the same place, by grabbing her neck with his hands and squeezing.

The officer explained that the suspect verbally insulted the victim by shouting at her, 'Take your suitcase and belongings and leave here.' Following this, he retrieved a bread knife from a kitchen drawer, which had a total length of 40 cm and a blade length of 20 cm, and swung it, causing a 10 cm cut on the victim's left shoulder. The suspect then grabbed the victim's right ring finger, twisted it, and caused a fracture, resulting in grievous harm.

The police stated that the suspect was arrested following the complaint, and an investigation was launched. The officer noted that neighbors of the couple reported hearing noises, and their statements will be collected. Additionally, they will investigate whether there is any surveillance footage of the altercation, which started inside the house and continued onto the street. The officer requested that the suspect remain in custody for two more days.

The suspect, speaking in court, claimed that they only argued and denied using a knife.

After considering the testimony, the judge ordered that the suspect remain in custody for an additional two days."
