Japan issues tsunami warning after 6.9 magnitude earthquake

A 6.9 magnitude earthquake off Japan’s southwest coast has prompted a tsunami advisory for parts of the country, authorities said on Monday.

The Japan Meteorological Agency issued the advisory for Miyazaki province on Kyushu island and the southern Kochi prefecture after the quake struck at 9:19 p.m. local time (7:19 a.m. ET).

Residents have been warned to stay away from coastal areas and avoid entering the sea until the advisory is lifted, the agency announced on social media platform X.
