Greek woman transport her boyfriend into north Cyprus illegally in the trunk of a car

A Greek woman who transported her boyfriend in the trunk of a car from south Cyprus to the north has been arrested for violating the border.

A Greek citizen, Evgenia Kanellaki, residing in Southern Cyprus, transported her boyfriend, Taylan Özgür Özer, to Southern Cyprus in the trunk of her car. While returning from Southern Cyprus, Evgenia Kanellaki and Taylan Özgür Özer were apprehended at the Metehan Border Gate.

The suspects were brought before the court on charges of violating a First-Degree Military Restricted Zone. The court ordered their detention in prison for a period not exceeding one month.

Police in a court testimony stated that on January 19, 2025, at 5:58 AM, at the Metehan Land Border Gate in Lefkosa, Greek citizen Evgenia Kanellaki, the driver of the vehicle with license plate number 'KYH 773,' approached the border gate to cross from Southern Cyprus to Northern Cyprus. While presenting her documents to the immigration officer for necessary procedures, her behavior raised suspicion.

During a search conducted in her presence, Taylan Özgür Özer was found in the trunk of the vehicle. He was discovered attempting to enter Northern Cyprus by secretly crossing the First-Degree Military Restricted Zone.

The officer emphasized that further investigations revealed that the suspects had similarly crossed into Southern Cyprus on January 17, 2025, through the Metehan Land Border Gate.

The police confirmed that both suspects were arrested, and an investigation was initiated.

The officer also stated that their investigation revealed that Taylan Özgür Özer had entered Northern Cyprus as a tourist on January 11, 2025, through Ercan Airport.

The police argued that if the suspects were released, they might unlawfully leave Northern Cyprus and repeat the same offense. Therefore, they requested that the suspects remain in custody.

After evaluating the testimony the judge ordered that the suspects be detained in prison for a period not exceeding one month.
