Greek Cypriot man detain in north Cyprus for transporting two Nepalese woman in the trunk of his car into north Cyprus illegally

A Greek Cypriot man who was found to have transported two women from the South to the North in the trunk of his car for 200 euros, was sent to prison in north Cyprus.

The man named as MA was found to have smuggled two women into Northern Cyprus in the trunk of his vehicle.

He was arrested on Monday January 13 and brought to a Military Court on charges of "violating a first-degree restricted zone" and "human trafficking."

The police stated that the suspect was found to had transported two Nepalese nationals, LB and RN in the trunk of his car into Northern Cyprus from the south on January 6, 2025.

Police reported that the two suspects crossed to the north by violating the restricted military zone at the Metehan Border Gate. On January 8, 2025, while they were attempting to leave through Ercan Airport, immigration officers discovered that they had no recorded entry into Northern Cyprus, and they were arrested.

The police explained that the Nepalese suspects had no legal ties to Northern Cyprus, were sent to prison to await trial, and that the suspect (the driver) was declared wanted.

The police officer told the court that the taxi driver suspect was arrested on January 11 while attempting to enter Northern Cyprus through the Metehan Land Border Crossing. 

In a voluntary statement, he admitted to smuggling the two women to the north for €200. The officer also stated that an investigation into human trafficking charges against the suspect had been initiated.

The police noted that the suspect is a citizen of the Republic of Cyprus (South Cyprus) and requested his detention in prison for no longer than one month.

The suspect, speaking in court, said, "I made a very big mistake, and I won't do it again."

The judge ordered the suspect to be detained in prison for a period not exceeding one month.
