Child seen begging on the streets of Lefkosa: Citizens reacts
An image shared on social media showing a young child begging on the streets of Lefkosia became a topic of discussion among citizens.
The images of the child who is of compulsory school age seen begging on the streets of Lefkosa was widely shared on social media.
Speaking on the matter to Kıbrıs Postası , Sevilay Yıldırmer, a Board Member of the Universal Children's Rights Association, emphasized that such situations lead to serious violations of children's rights.
Yıldırmer said, 'Children have the right to education, play, healthy rest, and life. No child can be employed before the age of 16. Youths between the ages of 16 and 18 can only work in specific trades of their choice, within the framework of the law, and for shorter hours than adults. However, begging is strictly prohibited for all age groups and has been banned under the law.'
Lawyer Yıldırmer highlighted that a child begging on the streets is most likely deprived of their right to education, healthy living, and protection, stating, 'This is not just a legal issue but also a humanitarian one. Both parents and social services bear significant responsibilities in protecting children.'
Pointing out the need to strengthen social services, Yıldırmer said, 'To prevent such cases, it is essential to strengthen social services. Additionally, reports need to be evaluated quickly. It is possible that social services are unaware of such cases. Once they are informed, they will act promptly.'"
