Exercise and sleep keep the brain young, study shows
Studies show that 30-60 minutes of exercise and deep sleep per day strengthens memory, improves cognitive function and slows brain aging.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Çiğdem Çınar evaluated the striking results of a study conducted by University College London (UCL). According to the study, 30-60 minutes of daily exercise at moderate and intense intensity improves brain functions not only that day but also the next day. In addition, it was revealed that exercise combined with deep sleep strengthens the positive effects on memory and cognitive functions even more.
EXERCISE STRENGTHENS BRAIN HEALTH
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Çınar, who evaluated the research findings, stated that exercise affects the brain's neurotransmitter levels and improves memory and cognitive functions. Çınar said, "Exercise provides not only immediate but also long-term cognitive benefits. Especially when combined with deep sleep, its positive effect on the brain increases."
EXERCISE IS A MUST FOR PHYSICAL AND MENTAL HEALTH
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Çınar pointed out that regular exercise has multifaceted benefits not only for mental but also physical health:
It strengthens heart health and balances blood pressure.
It reduces the risk of metabolic diseases.
It protects the health of the musculoskeletal system, supports joint health and increases bone density.
It increases the secretion of endorphins that improve mood and reduces stress levels.
CRITICAL IMPORTANCE FOR OVER 50
Individuals between the ages of 50 and 83 who participated in the study were more successful in memory tests when they exercised regularly. Exercise, especially when combined with deep sleep, supported cognitive functions in the aging brain. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Çınar emphasized the negative effects of a sedentary lifestyle on brain functions and stated that regular exercise is vital for mental health.
MINIMUM 30 MINUTES OF EXERCISE AND QUALITY SLEEP PER DAY IS A MUST
The study reveals that physical activity and quality sleep improve cognitive health even in old age. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Çınar stated that these two factors together slow down the aging process of the brain and made the following statements:
“Exercise and deep sleep are key elements of maintaining cognitive health. More research is needed to understand their long-term effects.”
Regular exercise and quality sleep improve the quality of life by strengthening both physical and mental health. 30-60 minutes of physical activity and a sleep pattern are among the keys to healthy aging.
