Today in History: Russian Tu-154 plane crashes in Ukraine killing 170 people on board
The following are some of the major events to have occurred on August 22:
1910 – Korea was annexed by Japan after five years as a protectorate.
1922 – Irish politician and Sinn Fein leader Michael Collins was killed in an ambush by Irish opponents. He was one of the signatories of the 1921 Anglo-Irish treaty.

1978 – President Jomo Kenyatta of Kenya died in his 80s. His exact date of birth was never firmly established.
1998 – Demonstrators in Khartoum attack British embassy after Prime Minister Blair expresses support for U.S. military strikes in Sudan and Afghanistan.
2002 – A painting by Venetian master Titian, worth more than 5 million pounds ($7.6 million), was found in a plastic bag on a London street seven years after it was stolen from Longleat House, western England.
2006 – All 170 passengers and crew on board a Russian Tu-154 airliner were killed when it crashed in Ukraine.
2008 – Men’s 4x100m relay team from Jamaica set new world record.
2010 – Thirty-three Chilean miners trapped underground for 17 days manage to send message to surface, making first contact with rescuers.
2010 – David Lekuta Rudisha of Kenya sets new world record in men’s 800m race.
2012 – Clashes over grazing land and water leave scores dead in Kenya.
